The patient monitor, or medical monitor or screen, is an electronic medical device that measures the patient’s vital signs and displays the data thus obtained, which may or may not be transmitted over a monitoring network. The physiological data is displayed continuously on a CRT or LCD screen on data channels along the time axis, and may be accompanied by digital readings of parameters calculated from the data, such as maximum, minimum, and average values, pulse and respiration rates, and so on.
In hospital intensive care units, bedside units allow continuous patient monitoring, with medical staff being continually informed of changes in the patient’s overall condition. Some monitors can even warn of imminent fatal cardiac conditions before visible signs are noticeable by clinical staff, such as atrial fibrillation or premature ventricular contraction (PVC).
